“I was really impressed with this book by neophyte Robert John MacKenzie . Thurmond’s Saga is a solid medieval-fantasy adventure tale, full of derring-do, heroics, horrid monsters and really nasty villains. But what made it especially nice is that despite being a fantasy tale (I’d call this “High Fantasy”) the characters are firmly grounded in reality. Thurmond, our plucky protagonist , has no superhuman skills with sword or magic, and in fact is a pretty normal youth, possessing only above average wit, bravery and luck. The rest of the characters- Rosco the veteran, Torgul the dwarf and Sarah the young sorceress are also well done and rooted in reality...Readers who enjoy Fantasy Roleplaying Games will especially like this book, methinks. Very readable. Robert makes few of the stumbles one expects from a newish author.”

“Mr. Mackenzie is a historian, scholar and teacher of literature, and his knowledge of medieval history and culture shines through in his writing. The entire book I felt like I was in a medieval world and I really enjoyed the cast of characters. The antagonists especially made me laugh with their temper tantrums, stupidity and mannerisms. There was also quite a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor in this book that I also enjoyed. The battle scenes were also some of my favorite parts of the book! ”

“Wonderful story with splendid language! It was a joy getting to know, worry about and laugh with the characters of ‘Thurmond’. Rich descriptions with an enjoyable story plot leads the reader through an adventure with surprises and quirky characters.”

“A romping d&d adventure brought to the printed page. Memorable characters set in a very believable, realistic fantasy world. The author weaves a lot of detailed historic info and even has characters spouting common historic misconceptions as fact, adding depth without detracting from the story. Of course the end is happy, but not of the happily ever after variety. Loose ends are brought to a satisfying close, in sometimes very unexpected ways.”
